Nick Abbot
The Interview

Nick Abbot very kindly agreed to fill in a questionnaire for this
web site, based on questions from my fellow Internet fans.

Your radio shows

Of all the stations you've been at, what is the best station you have worked for? And which was/is your favourite show to host?
Virgin is the best station - it's just a cooler place to be than any station I've been to. As for favourite show - I thought the 7-9 slot on Talk Radio had a good head of steam and I enjoy the LBC show with Carol.

If you had complete freedom, what would be your ideal programme/timeslot/radio station?
Free form talk in a daytime slot on a big station.

What makes the perfect phone-in show?
The perfect phone-in host - see Neil Rogers on WQAM in Miami. (Hear him on their website in the archive section: WQAM.com)

What is your all time favourite call/caller?
Elizabeth from Chedar springs to mind. There was also a woman I unkindly called Mad Mary. Mrs Hull also gave good value for money.

And the worst caller/call?
I don't remember the bad ones as they are by their nature forgettable.

Is Carol really that annoying?
No.

How well do you know your boss, Chris Evans? And are you friends?
I don't know him very well but I have great admiration for what he has achieved - he has taken what it is to be a DJ further than anyone in the history of British radio.

Has he ever listened to any of your shows?
Yes, I think he has heard my shows on Virgin - I don't know whether he's heard my phone shows.

Was the "scouse git" (catchphrase 'It's great') really Chris Moyles?
Apparently so.

Would you ever leave radio, if so what would you do?
If I had to leave radio I'd do very little which is what I'm best at.

Would you do a TV show if they offered you LOADS of money?
As for TV, I have no desire to do it but if it didn't make me look an ass then I'd take the money.

The UK radio scene

What do you think UK radio is lacking at the moment?
More stations.

What do you listen to on the radio and which UK presenters & DJs do you feel are the most talented?
I really don't listen to radio much at all. In this country I think Chris is good as I've said but all my heroes of radio are either dead (Kenny Everett) or American.

How do you feel about the fact that British radio is being over-run by talentless failed TV presenters?
Is it?

What do you think of pirate radio? Have you ever listened to any?
I don't hear any of it as I don't listen to much radio at all but I think that anything that increases choice is healthy.

Does Gail Porter look as good up-close as she does on the TV?
I haven't seen her on TV so I can't tell.

About yourself

What is your all-time favourite television programme?
Beavis and Buthead.

What is the most embarrassing moment of your career/life?
I'm not telling you.

What is your ideal holiday?
The next one. Whatever that may be.

Your favourite meal?
Chef Boy-Ar-Dee Pizza Mix. It's a bake your own one that you get from America. Food of the Gods.

When out and about, do you ever get recognised?
No, never.

How do you feel about DJs/presenters who 'copy' parts of your 'act'?
Do they?

What do you think of the comparisons between Chris Moyles and yourself?
Are there?

Have you heard from Mrs Hull recently?
No.

And finally, what do you think of your fans? Why are they so addicted to you?
I feel really grateful that people in whatever numbers have latched on to me. The web sites, the response when I get fired (!) all that is really touching. As to why - I really have no idea. I've always felt more attuned to the American way of doing a talk show so perhaps it's that I'm a bit different.

Does it concern you?!
Does it concern me? - No, not unless they start showing up at my flat with more questionnaires for me to fill out.
